Etymology  guthega: "Guthega is a Snowy Mountains locality that has yielded a specimen of this species. The specific name is treated as a noun in apposition."1

Taxonomic notes

This species was described by Donnellan, Hutchinson, Dempsey & Osborne in 2002, but was originally placed in a different genus.1
Moved from Egernia to Liopholis in 2008.2
