Etymology  Cryptoblepharus: 'hidden eyelid', referring to the fused eyelids.
mertensi: "Named for the late Professor Robert Mertens, former curator at the Senckenberg Museum, Frankfurt, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Cryptoblepharus taxonomy."1
