Taxonomic notes

Previously considered a subspecies of lined earless dragon (Tympanocryptis lineata), but elevated to full species in 1999.1

Significant genetic differences between the New South Wales and Canberra populations of this species were noted.2

The disjunct populations of this species were rearranged in Melville, Chaplin, Hutchinson, Sumner, Gruber, MacDonald & Sarre (2019) to become:
T. pinguicolla - Restricted to Victoria. Possibly extinct.
Monaro grassland earless dragon (Tympanocryptis osbornei) - Cooma/Monaro region, NSW.
Bathurst grassland earless dragon (Tympanocryptis mccartneyi) - Bathurst region, NSW.
lined earless dragon (Tympanocryptis lineata) - Canberra specimens are now assigned to T. lineata.

The Darling Downs population formerly referred to this species is now recognised as the Condamine earless dragon (Tympanocryptis condaminensis).3
