Tympanocryptis gigas - Mitchell, 1948
Pronunciation  TIM-pan-oh-KRIP-tiss
Etymology  Tympanocryptis: 'hidden ear'.
gigas: "Mitchell (1948) did not explicitly provide an etymology in his description of this taxon as a subspecies of T. cephalus. However, the word gigas is a Latinized version of the Greek gantos for ‘giant’, presumably in reference to this taxon’s relatively large body size to T. cephalus. We treat gigas as a noun in apposition." (Doughty, Kealley, Shoo & Melville 2015)
