Etymology  Tympanocryptis: 'hidden ear'.
diabolicus: "‘diabolicus’ means ‘devil’ in Latin, in reference to the rich red coloration possessed by most individuals of this species. Used as a noun in apposition." (Doughty, Kealley, Shoo & Melville 2015)
