Etymology |
Crocodylus: 'crocodile'.
johnstoni: after Mr Johnston, the first European to report it to science. Krefft repeatedly mis-spelled the species name as "johnsoni" in his initial description, but later corrected it. According to the rules of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature the original, unintentional name is the correct name, but most people and publications use "johnstoni" as Krefft had intended. |

Natural history
Active by day, but forages mostly at night. DietAn opportunistic hunter during the dry season, feeding widely on spiders, aquatic insects, terrestrial insects, shrimp, fish, anurans, turtles and snakes. Small freshwater crocodiles prey heavily on invertebrates and frogs. Larger individuals prey heavily on fish, turtles and snakes, occasionally taking mammals and birds2 . Presumably more aquatic prey is taken during the wet season when non-submerged land is uncommon. |
