Etymology  Vermicella: 'little worm'.
intermedia: "The specific name is in reference to the intermediate number of ventral scales, band number, band width, and relative body width when compared to the other species of Vermicella".1

Description

Fewer than 75 black bands on body and tail.

Similar species

Narrow-banded bandy-bandy (Vermicella multifasciata) - has more than 75 black bands on body and tail.
Other Vermicella species - have internasal scales.

This species was described by Keogh & Smith in 1996.1

Split from Narrow-banded bandy-bandy (Vermicella multifasciata) in 1996.1

Dorsal scales at midbody   15
Ventrals   234 to 258 with a divided anal scale
Subcaudals   15 to 28 and are divided
