Description

Short and stout with a broad, distinct head. Body plain in colour, usually being olive-brown, brown or reddish-brown above. Head sometimes darker than body, or flecked with pale spots.

Similar species

Common death adder (Acanthophis antarcticus) - has a broader head and stouter body; death adders are cross-banded, whereas E. curta has a plain, unpatterned body.
Lake Cronin snake (Paroplocephalus atriceps) - has a distinct black head (versus brown to dark grey in E. curta).

Scale count information

Dorsal scales at midbody   17 to 21
Ventrals   130 to 145 with a single anal scale
Subcaudals   30 to 40 and are single
Other scale information   Scales smooth.
Usually 19 midbody scales.
Danger rating   Dangerous. Although usually not regarded as capable of inflicting a fatal bite, its venom is poorly understood. The venom appears to be similar to that of the Death Adders.
Note: even a bite from a 'virtually harmless' or non-venomous reptile can result in serious complications. Play it safe and don't get bitten by anything.
